Basic Sciences

Architecture starts when you carefully put two bricks together. There it begins.

Description:

The Basic Science Department is one of the departments of the College of Nursing at the University of Sulaimani; it has been established since September 2022 and serves as the first point of contact for first-year students with university life. Students can acquire a huge range of knowledge and skills for the upcoming years. They will also be taught about the fundamentals of nursing sciences, which work as a foundation to learn about several topics, including the university work environment, English language, professional skills, ethical perspectives, computer skills, and anatomy and physiology for nursing students. Basic sciences are curiosity-driven sciences, but they also have a fundamental role in university life. They enable the necessary means and tools to address global health and environmental improvement, such as conservation of natural resources and health promotion.

Department Vision:

The department’s vision is to prepare nursing students for the upcoming study years and to work in the hospital and community with dedication, devotion, compassion, and kindness. It is also to develop a center for excellence in nursing, which will provide quality educational programs that are evidence-based and encourage innovations to improve health and patient care.

Department Mission:

The mission of the department is to provide thoughtful innovation in teaching and learning skills. The mission is accomplished through curricula grounded in experiential learning, evidence-based standards, and collaborative strategies to build effective inter-professional teams to ensure quality education.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to adapt to the university environment; they will also be able to practice clinical excellence, critical thinking, student-centered learning, experiential learning, holistic and compassionate care, self-reflection, inter-professional collaboration, transformative curricula, ethical considerations, and communication skills.

Study Methods:

In the department, there are two semesters, the first semester and the second semester, which include theoretical and laboratory-based lectures. Different methods, tools, and styles can be used in the department’s courses accordingly. For instance, during face-to-face class teaching, presentation with an assisted tool (a projector), clinical methods for the related topics, and tutorial seasons, team working, and group discussion, student feedback will be taken as formative and summative feedback. For instance, several topics need to be covered in two exams: the mid-term and final exams. This is in addition to seminar presentation, report preparation, and assignments.

Language:

The two main languages will be used in the department. The first is English, which is the key language for the medical colleges, and the second is Kurdish, which may be used for further discussion and/or on several topics.

Duration:

In the college of nursing, there are four years of academic study, which is basically full-time study.
